Have you ever noticed that when you go on social media like Facebook groups, for example, so many new entrepreneurs post almost exactly the same things as one another? Have you seen how repetitive a lot of the content out there really is?
I have. I notice it every day. It’s no secret that marketing is vital for your business to survive. You must be visible to get customers. But how do you stand out when there are so many others doing the same thing you’re doing already?
The truth is there will always be many others building a business in the same industry as yours, whatever that may be. With so many people in the world, you can’t avoid that. But you can learn to stand out. And the secret to standing out in your industry is AUTHENTICITY.
You might think it’s hard to be authentic, but the truth is it’s the easiest thing in the world when you realize what makes you authentic. It’s really simple. Being authentic means simply being yourself.
Unfortunately, a lot of people find it difficult to be themselves. The reasons for that vary. Sometimes it’s a matter of self-doubt and low confidence. We learn to pick up these traits from a young age. From being judged in the past to feeling burdened by society’s expectations, we end up doing things that are against our very nature.
We often look up to others for inspiration and when we see how successful those people are, we think that we should do things exactly the same way so that we too can achieve what they have. But the problem with that approach is that you might end up modelling your idols so much that you lose sight of who you really are.
You start to talk like them and maybe you even copy their style a little bit. This is no way to be authentic. You have to remember that when you adapt someone else’s style, it will always be somewhat forced. Others can feel this and they’ll think you’re a copycat. That never bodes well for any business.
The only sure way to tackle this is to practice being totally yourself whenever you do any kind of marketing or social media posting. It might take some practice, but it’s worth it because people are hungry for authenticity. With so much noise out there, the more original and unique content or products you put out, the more likely you’ll get people to notice you.
So whatever makes you who you are, let that out. Let your true personality shine, quirks and all. Allow your customers to get a glimpse of your persona because that will help them feel more connected to you. People always want to do business with people, not companies. If you let them see you for who you are, you’ll gain your customers’ trust and they’ll be much more likely to buy from you or do business with you. So be yourself because an original is always better than a copy.
